How to Fight It and Win
Of all the body issues that I hear about, one of the most frustrating problems is cellulite. The vast majority of women have to deal with cellulite to some degree and it has a reputation for being next to impossible to get rid of.
The good news is that it isn’t impossible to get rid of cellulite. You just have to understand what it is, what causes it, and then attack it in the right way. I’ve done it myself and got amazing results and I’ve helped other women do it too.
What is cellulite actually?
Because cellulite looks different than fat in other areas of the body, a lot of women are misled (mostly by cellulite cream companies) into thinking that it’s a special kind of fat. It isn’t. Fat is fat.
The reason cellulite looks different than say, the fat under your arms, is that you have a storage problem. Fat is made up of individual fat cells. You can think of those cells as tiny water balloons. Those cells are stored in individual little compartments, similar to a honeycomb. That honeycomb is made up of connective tissue.
When the individual fat cells become too full and too large, they bulge out of their little compartments. This is exacerbated by the breakdown of the connective tissue surrounding them. That breakdown can be caused by genetics, by aging and simply by being stretched to capacity.
So, when the fat cells begin bulging and the connective tissue of the fat layer of the skin become thin and delicate, the fat cells become visible beneath the outermost layer of the skin. It’s a little bit like bubbles rising to the surface of the water. This is when it’s called cellulite; when it becomes visible on the surface of your skin, but it’s still just fat.
Why do women get cellulite and men don’t?
It doesn’t seem fair, does it? But it’s a matter of biology. Women’s bodies are designed to store more fat than men’s and they’re predisposed to store that fat in certain areas. These include the abdominal area, butt and thighs. When you begin to store too much fat in these areas you run into the storage problem I just described.
Why do some women get cellulite and not others?
You would think that being overweight would be the only cause of cellulite but it’s not quite that simple. There are plenty of overweight women who never get cellulite and plenty of skinny women who do. Genetics, diet and exercise habits all come into play when it comes to cellulite.
So how do you get rid of cellulite?
Advertisers have you believing that massage, cellulite creams and especially massaging in their cellulite creams will help get rid of cellulite. The premise behind massage as a cure is that it somehow “breaks up” the fat cells so they’re no longer visible. But fat cells don’t break up; they can only be broken down by metabolism.
The truth about the creams is that some have been shown to temporarily tighten and tone the skin, making cellulite less visible, but that’s all they do. They don’t get rid of the cellulite and the effects of the cream are fleeting.
There are three things you have to do to get rid of cellulite for real: clean up your diet to cleanse your body of stored toxins, burn up that stored fat and build more lean muscle in the trouble areas (the butt and legs). Do these three things simultaneously and you will see results in as little as two or three weeks. I’ll tell you exactly how to do that.
Clean Up Your Diet/Clean Up Your Body
Did you know that toxins are stored in our fat cells? That’s right. All of the pesticides, additives, preservatives, herbicides and other junk that’s in processed foods can be contributing to the overfilling of fat cells. Whatever toxins are not expelled from the body through digestion are stored right there on your butt and thighs.
In order to correct that problem you have to rid your body of the toxins that are already there and also minimize any new toxins. Fortunately, cleaning up your diet will accomplish both.
Eliminate or at least drastically reduce processed foods such as premade snacks, chips, fast food, packaged deli meats and almost anything else that is already prepared and ready to eat. They’re loaded with preservatives and chemicals that your body cannot break down so they get stored in your fat cells.
Your diet should be at least 90% whole foods at least 90% of the time. That means that 9 out of 10 things you eat on 9 out of 10 days should be a whole food such as fresh vegetables and fruits, lean meat and seafood, eggs, nuts and seeds. Yes, you can have your treats, but they should be treats, not everyday staples.
Also, the whole foods you eat should be organic as much as possible. Buy fresh fruits and vegetables that are organically grown, eat wild-caught fish and shellfish, and organic, grass-fed or free range meat and poultry. Your dairy should also be from organically-raised animals in minimal amounts.
If you have a cellulite problem, you should also cut gluten from your diet, at least only have gluten as treats if at all. Gluten sensitivity often goes undiagnosed and it can slow digestion and the absorption of nutrients to the point that most of the toxins in your
food get stored as fat and most of the nutrients get expelled as waste, which is the opposite of how it should be. Getting rid of gluten can heal your digestive tract and help speed digestion and absorption immensely.
By eating this way, you not only eliminate the vast amount of toxins, you also speed up your digestion, which means faster metabolism and less fat storage. In the process of speeding up digestion and healing your digestive tract (by eating fiber-rich fresh foods that clean out your intestines) you also eliminate much of the toxic build-up you already have.
To help this process along, you also need to make sure you’re drinking a ton of water to help flush out those toxins. You need to drink a minimum of 64fl ounces a day and more if you’re working out hard or are in a hot climate.
Burn the Fat!
Speeding up your metabolism is essential to getting rid of the fat stores on your butt and thighs. You also need to create a calorie deficit. That comes from taking in fewer calories (but not cutting them too low) than you burn in a given day. The best way to do that is through a combination of reducing the calories you take in and increasing the calories you burn.
I strongly recommend that you get at least 3-4 cardio workouts per week and make them count. No strolling along for an hour on the treadmill while you watch TV. To make your cardio count, you’ve got to work. Cardio intervals are the best way to do that because they boost your metabolism for the rest of the day and even as much as the next 48 hours. The great thing about interval cardio is that it’s adaptable to almost any cardio activity. If you run, bike, jump rope, swim or even walk, you can build high intensity intervals into your workout.
Target-Train Your Trouble Spots
The third means of getting rid of your cellulite is to build lean muscle in the areas where you have cellulite. That means working your butt and your thighs. Working your glutes, especially, is the single best thing you can do to rid your body of cellulite.
By building more lean muscle in your thighs and butt you speed up your metabolism even more (because muscle burns calories and fat does not) and you also tighten up the skin in those areas as you build muscle.
Almost any exercise that works your thighs and butt will help get rid of cellulite, but some of the best are squats, lunges, dumbbell deadlifts, barbell step-ups and weighted side step-ups. These old-school moves are old school because they work. They will reshape your butt and thighs in an amazingly short time and give your lower body the
shape you’ve always wanted. At the same time you will be getting rid of the cellulite, so when it’s time to show off your new muscles in that gorgeous new bikini you won’t have to worry about ripples and honeycombs.
I promise you that if you follow these three steps and really put in some effort, you will see results. Cellulite may be a common problem, but it doesn’t have to be your problem!
